How to Turn WhatsApp Skin Questions Into Skincare Sales

6 min read

A customer sends you a message: “Hi, what can I use for dark spots?”

You reply with a long list of ten products. She says “Thank you, I will think about it.” And you never hear from her again.

Sound familiar? Skincare customers do not only want a product. They want to know what is right for their skin. When you answer that question well on WhatsApp, the sale often follows.

Here is a simple 5 step way to do it.

Step 1: Ask before you sell

Different skin needs different care. If you suggest a product without knowing the skin, you may suggest the wrong one. A wrong product can mean a bad reaction, a refund and an unhappy customer.

So start with two or three short questions:

Hello, thank you for your message. To help you well, may I ask: What is your skin type (oily, dry, or mixed)? What is the main problem you want to solve? Do you use any product now?

Example: Neema sells face creams and body oils from her home in Mikocheni. A customer asks about dark spots. Neema does not list products. She asks the three questions above. The customer says she has oily skin and uses a strong soap. Now Neema knows what to suggest, and the customer feels cared for.

Step 2: Suggest one product, not ten

Too many choices make people stop. After you ask your questions, suggest one main product, and explain why in one or two simple lines.

Thank you. For oily skin with dark spots, I suggest our Gentle Daily Cleanser. It cleans without drying the skin. Use it morning and night.

If you want, add one extra item (like a sunscreen) as a second step. But lead with one clear answer.

Example: Baraka runs a small shop in Kariakoo that sells skincare. A customer asks for “something for pimples.” Baraka suggests a cleanser and one light moisturiser, and writes the order of use. The customer buys both, because the plan is clear and simple.

Step 3: Show it, do not only tell it

A photo or a short video helps the customer trust you. Send:

  • A clear photo of the product, with the name and size.
  • A short video (15 to 30 seconds) showing how to use it.
  • A photo of the label, so the customer can see the ingredients.

Step 4: Be honest and keep the customer safe

This step builds trust, and trust builds sales.

  • Say clearly: results are different for each person, and skin needs time.
  • Suggest a patch test first: put a small amount on the inner arm and wait a day.
  • Do not promise to cure skin problems. Do not say “this removes all spots in 7 days”.
  • If a customer describes pain, deep acne, a rash or a skin condition, kindly suggest she sees a doctor or a skin specialist first.

Thank you for telling me. Because of the pain you describe, I suggest you see a skin doctor first. When your skin is ready, I will be happy to help you choose a gentle routine.

Step 5: Make buying easy, then follow up

When the customer says yes, do not make her work hard. Send one message with everything she needs:

Here is your order: Gentle Daily Cleanser, TZS ___. Delivery in Dar es Salaam is TZS ___ and takes 1 day. You can pay by M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa or Airtel Money. Please send me your location when you are ready.

Then follow up. A few days after the product arrives, send a short check-in:

Hello, how is your skin feeling with the cleanser? If you have any question about how to use it, I am here.

This small message does three things. It shows you care, it catches problems early, and it often leads to a second purchase or a review. Read more in A Simple Way to Turn Happy Customers Into Free Advertising.

Save your best answers

You will get the same questions again and again: “Which product is for oily skin?”, “How do I use this?”, “Is it safe for sensitive skin?”, “Do you deliver?”

Write your best answer to each one, and save it as a quick reply in WhatsApp Business. Then you can answer in seconds, and your reply is always clear and polite. Your quick checklist

  1. Ask three questions: skin type, main problem, current products.
  2. Suggest one main product, with a short reason.
  3. Send a photo, a short video and the label.
  4. Be honest, suggest a patch test, and send serious skin problems to a doctor.
  5. Send one clear order message, then follow up after a few days.

A skincare sale is not won by the longest message. It is won by the customer who feels you understand her skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast should I reply to a skincare question on WhatsApp?

As fast as you can. Many customers message two or three brands at the same time, and the one that replies first with a clear answer often gets the sale. If you cannot reply at once, use an away message that says when you will answer.

Should I send the price in my first message?

Answer the question first, then give the price together with your suggested product. A price with no explanation makes customers compare only on cost. A price with a clear reason feels fair.

What if the customer says “I will think about it”?

Stay polite and do not push. Send one gentle follow up the next day, such as a short reminder of what you suggested and a simple way to order. If she still does not reply, leave it and keep her on your list for your next offer.
