How to Use Instagram Reels to Get Customers Without Paying for Ads

3 min read

Instagram Reels can bring new customers without spending on ads. This guide explains the steps in order.

What Is a Reel?

A Reel is a short video on Instagram, usually 15 to 30 seconds for business. Instagram shows Reels to people who do not yet follow you. A good Reel can reach new customers for free.

Step 1: Prepare Your Profile

Before you post, make sure your profile is ready.

  1. Use a clear profile photo, such as your logo or product.
  2. Write a short bio that says what your business does and where.
  3. Add a contact button or WhatsApp link.
  4. Switch to a Business or Creator account, under Settings, Account type.

If your profile is not ready, people who find your Reel may not know how to reach you.

Step 2: Plan Before You Film

Do not film first and think later. Answer three questions first, in one sentence each:

  1. Who is this Reel for?
  2. What problem does your business solve for them?
  3. What should they do after watching?

Step 3: Film With Your Phone

A phone camera is good enough. Follow these rules:

  1. Use good light, near a window or outside.
  2. Hold the phone still, with both hands or a stand.
  3. Film upright, in vertical mode.
  4. Keep the background simple.
  5. Record more footage than you need.

Step 4: Keep It Short and Clear

  1. Show the most important part in the first 2 seconds.
  2. Keep the whole Reel under 30 seconds if you can.
  3. Focus on one idea per Reel.

Step 5: Edit the Reel

You can edit inside the Instagram app. This is enough for most businesses.

  1. Trim any parts that are not needed.
  2. Add text on screen, since many people watch without sound.
  3. Add a trending audio from the Reel editor.
  4. Keep the text large enough to read on a small screen.

Step 6: Write a Simple Caption

  1. Start with a short, clear sentence about the video.
  2. Add 2 to 3 sentences of detail, in simple language.
  3. End with a clear next step, such as “Message us to order.”
  4. Add 3 to 5 hashtags about your business and location.

Step 7: Post at the Right Time

Post when customers are most likely online. For most Tanzanian small businesses, this is:

  1. Morning, between 7am and 9am.
  2. Evening, between 7pm and 9pm.

Check Instagram Insights after a few weeks to see your followers’ exact active times.

Step 8: Reply to Every Comment and Message

  1. Reply to comments within a few hours if you can.
  2. Answer questions clearly and politely.
  3. Reply quickly to questions about price or availability.

Fast replies also tell Instagram your account is active, which helps future Reels.

Step 9: Check What Is Working

After two to three weeks, check your results.

  1. Open Instagram Insights.
  2. Look at each Reel’s views, likes, comments, and shares.
  3. Note which Reels performed best.
  4. Make more Reels like the ones that worked.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Posting only about products, with nothing useful or entertaining.
  2. Using long, complicated captions.
  3. Ignoring comments and messages.
  4. Giving up after one Reel that did not perform well.

Summary

Reels bring customers without ad spend, but need consistent effort. Prepare your profile, plan before filming, keep videos short, post at the right time, and reply to your audience. Check results and improve over time.
