How to Use Instagram Reels to Get Customers Without Paying for Ads

4 min read

Instagram Reels can bring new customers to your business without spending money on ads. This guide explains the steps in simple terms. Follow them in order.

What is a Reel?

A Reel is a short video on Instagram. It can be up to 3 minutes long, but the best Reels for business are usually 15 to 30 seconds. Instagram shows Reels to people who do not follow you yet. This is different from a normal post, which mostly reaches people who already follow your account.

This means a good Reel can reach new customers for free.

Step 1: Prepare your Instagram profile

Before you post any Reel, make sure your profile is ready.

  1. Use a clear profile photo. A logo or a clear photo of your product works well.
  2. Write a short, clear bio. Say what your business does and where it is located.
  3. Add a contact button or a WhatsApp link. This makes it easy for people to reach you.
  4. Switch to a Business or Creator account. Go to Settings, then Account type. This gives you extra tools, such as viewing Insights.

If your profile is not ready, people who find your Reel may not know how to contact you.

Step 2: Plan your Reel before you film

Do not film first and think later. Plan first. Answer these three questions:

  1. Who is this Reel for? (Example: a mother looking for school shoes.)
  2. What problem does your business solve for that person?
  3. What should they do after watching? (Example: message you, visit your shop, or click the link in your bio.)

Write these answers down. Keep them short, one sentence each.

Step 3: Film with your phone

You do not need a professional camera. A phone camera is good enough. Follow these basic rules:

  1. Use good light. Film near a window or outside during the day. Avoid dark rooms.
  2. Hold the phone still. Use both hands, or place the phone on a stand.
  3. Film in vertical mode. Hold the phone upright, not sideways.
  4. Keep the background simple. A busy background can distract from your message.
  5. Record more footage than you need. It is easier to cut a video down than to add more later.

Step 4: Keep the video short and clear

  1. Show the most important part in the first 2 seconds. This is what makes people stop scrolling.
  2. Keep the whole Reel under 30 seconds if possible.
  3. Focus on one idea per Reel. Do not try to explain everything in one video.

Step 5: Edit the Reel

You can edit directly inside the Instagram app. This is enough for most businesses.

  1. Trim the video to remove any parts that are not needed.
  2. Add text on screen. Many people watch without sound, so text helps them understand.
  3. Add a trending audio. Open the Reel editor and check the audio option marked as trending. This can help more people see your Reel.
  4. Keep the text large enough to read on a small phone screen.

Step 6: Write a simple caption

  1. Start the caption with a short, clear sentence about the video.
  2. Add 2 to 3 sentences with more detail. Keep the language simple.
  3. End with a clear next step. Example: “Message us to order” or “Visit our shop in Mwenge.”
  4. Add 3 to 5 hashtags related to your business and location. Example: #TanzaniaBusiness #DarEsSalaam #YourProductType.

Step 7: Post at the right time

Post when your customers are most likely to be online. For most small businesses in Tanzania, this is:

  1. Morning, between 7am and 9am.
  2. Evening, between 7pm and 9pm.

Check your Instagram Insights after a few weeks. This will show you the exact times your followers are active.

Step 8: Reply to every comment and message

This step is often skipped, but it is important.

  1. Reply to comments within a few hours if possible.
  2. Answer questions clearly and politely.
  3. If someone asks about price or availability, reply quickly. A slow reply can lose a customer.

Fast replies also tell Instagram that your account is active. This can help your future Reels reach more people.

Step 9: Check what is working

After posting Reels for two to three weeks, check your results.

  1. Open Instagram Insights.
  2. Look at each Reel’s views, likes, comments, and shares.
  3. Note which Reels performed best.
  4. Make more Reels similar to the ones that worked well.

Do not guess what works. Use the numbers to decide.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Posting only about products, with no useful or entertaining content.
  2. Using long, complicated captions.
  3. Ignoring comments and messages.
  4. Posting once and giving up if the first Reel does not perform well. Results usually improve after several Reels.

Summary

Reels can bring customers to your business without paying for ads, but they need consistent effort. Prepare your profile, plan before filming, keep videos short and clear, post at the right time, and reply to your audience. Check your results regularly and improve over time.
