Start at Local Wholesale Markets
Kariakoo Market in Dar es Salaam is the biggest wholesale market in Tanzania. You can see the products before you buy. You can pay cash. You can ask questions in person. Visit the market before you order anything online. Compare prices from more than one seller.
Check the Tanzania National Commercial Directory
The Tanzania National Commercial Directory, or NCD, lists registered businesses. You can search it at ncd.co.tz. Use it to check if a supplier is real. A supplier with no listing is not always fake. But you must ask more questions before you trust them.
Verify the Supplier Before You Pay
Do not send money to a new supplier without checks. Ask for the supplier’s TIN, the Tax Identification Number. Ask for a physical address. Check that address on Google Maps. Ask for a landline number, not only a mobile number. A supplier who avoids these questions is a risk.
Order a Small Sample First
Do not place a large order with a new supplier. Order a small amount first. Five to ten units is enough to test. Check the quality when it arrives. Check the packaging. Check that the order matches what you asked for. Place a larger order only after the sample passes.
Import From China or Dubai the Safe Way
Some products cost less when you import them. Alibaba is a common platform for this. Choose a supplier with a Verified or Gold Supplier badge. Ask for real photos and videos of your product, not stock photos. Use a shipping agent to clear your goods through customs. Add shipping, customs duty, and agent fees to your real cost. Do not calculate cost from the product price alone.
Negotiate the Minimum Order Quantity
Most suppliers set a Minimum Order Quantity, called an MOQ. A new business does not always need the full MOQ. Ask for a smaller first order. Many suppliers agree to this for a new customer. Build trust first. Increase your order size later, once you trust the supplier.
Pay in a Way You Can Prove
Use M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money, or a bank transfer. These payments leave a record. Avoid payment methods you cannot prove later. Keep every receipt and every invoice. You need these records for your taxes. You also need them if a dispute happens.
A cheap supplier who delivers late, or delivers the wrong product, is not cheap. Reliability matters more than the lowest price. Choose the supplier you can depend on, not only the supplier with the lowest number.
