If business money goes into your personal M-Pesa or personal bank account, your bookkeeping is already broken. A business bank account is not just a formality. It marks the line between “my money” and “the business’s money”. Every lender, auditor, and tax return will ask you to prove that line exists.
If you have already registered your business in Tanzania, opening a business bank account is usually one of the last legal steps before you start trading. Here is what you need, what to expect, and how to choose a bank.
What You’ll Need Before You Walk In
The exact list changes slightly by bank. For a sole proprietorship, also called a business name, you typically need: your BRELA registration certificate, your business license, your TIN certificate, a valid ID (passport, national ID, or voter’s card), and two passport photos. Some banks also ask for a referee, someone who already holds an account with them.
For a limited company, add these documents: your Certificate of Incorporation, your Memorandum and Articles of Association, a board resolution that authorises the account and names the signatories, and the TIN and ID for each director. You only need a VAT registration certificate if your business is VAT-registered.
Step-by-Step: Opening the Account
- Gather the documents above. Bring both the original and a photocopy, where the bank asks for both.
- Visit a branch, or start the application online. Most major banks now offer this.
- Fill in the account opening form. For a company, also complete the board resolution that names who can sign and authorise transactions.
- Submit your documents for verification. The bank checks your registration against BRELA and TRA records.
- Make your opening deposit, if the bank requires one, and receive your account details.
Most business accounts open within one to two weeks, once all documents are ready. A simple sole proprietorship account can sometimes open faster.
How Much Money Do You Need to Open It?
Many banks in Tanzania do not require a strict minimum deposit for a business account. Still, it is sensible to open with a small working balance. Around TZS 100,000 is a common starting point, so the account is not empty on your first day of trading. Opening the account is usually free or low-cost. But ask about monthly maintenance fees, transaction charges, and mobile banking fees before you commit. These fees vary more between banks than the opening cost does.
Which Bank Should You Choose?
We are not a bank or a financial advisor, so we will not tell you which one to pick. Small businesses across Tanzania commonly bank with CRDB Bank, NMB Bank, NBC, Stanbic Bank Tanzania, Equity Bank Tanzania, and Standard Chartered, among others. Before you choose, compare the branch and agent network near you, the quality of the mobile banking app, and how well it connects with mobile money for customer payments. Also compare the fee schedule for the transaction volume you expect. Ask each bank directly for its current requirements and fees, since these change.
A separate account makes your business real on paper, not just in conversation. It also makes it possible to apply for a loan, show a lender real cash flow history, and file accurate taxes without guessing which transactions were personal.
