How to Get Your Business on Google Maps (So Customers Find You Without Asking Around)
Before a customer asks a friend where to find you, they search Google first. If your shop does not show up on Google Maps, that customer goes to a competitor who does.
A Google Business Profile is free. It puts your shop on Google Maps and Google Search, with your address, hours, and phone number. This article shows you how to set one up correctly, step by step.
What Is a Google Business Profile?
A Google Business Profile is a free listing for your business. It shows up when someone searches your business name, or searches for a business like yours near them. It appears on Google Maps and on the right side of Google Search results. You manage it from your phone, and it takes about 15 minutes to set up.
Step 1: Claim or Create Your Profile
Search your business name on Google Maps first. Does a listing already exist? Someone may have created it for you automatically. Claim it. Does nothing show up? Create a new profile at google.com/business. Use your real business name, not a slogan or a list of keywords. Google can suspend a profile that breaks this rule.
Step 2: Fill In Every Detail
An empty profile does not build trust. Fill in every field Google gives you.
- Category. Choose the category that matches your business exactly, such as “Hair Salon” or “Electronics Store”.
- Address. Set your exact pin location on the map, not just the street name.
- Hours. Add your real opening and closing hours, and update them for holidays.
- Phone number and WhatsApp. Use a number you actually check every day.
- Website or link-in-bio. Add a link, even if it just goes to your WhatsApp Business catalog.
Step 3: Add Real Photos
Add photos of your shop front, so people recognize it when they arrive. Add photos of your products or your work. Add a photo of your team, if your customers value a personal touch. Do not use blurry or dark photos. A profile with clear, real photos gets far more clicks than one with none.
Step 4: Ask Every Happy Customer for a Review
Reviews build trust faster than anything else on your profile. Ask a happy customer to leave one before they leave your shop. Share your review link on WhatsApp after a sale. We cover exactly how to get more reviews, and how to handle a bad one, in our guide on getting Google reviews for a small business in Tanzania.
A complete, active Google Business Profile works for you all day, every day. It answers a customer’s questions before they even message you: where are you, are you open now, and can other people vouch for you.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Leaving hours blank or wrong. A customer who arrives to a closed shop will not try again.
- Ignoring messages and questions on your profile. Customers can message you directly through your listing. Reply quickly.
- Never posting updates. You can post offers and news on your profile, just like on social media. An inactive profile looks abandoned.
- Copying a competitor’s category or keywords. This confuses Google and can get your profile flagged.
A Simple Setup Checklist
- Search your business name on Google Maps and claim or create your profile.
- Fill in your category, address, hours, and phone number completely.
- Add clear photos of your shop, products, and team.
- Ask three happy customers this week for a review.
- Reply to every message and review, good or bad.
