Want to Become a Better Marketer? Study These 7 Things

5 min read

Your ads are running. People like your posts. But sales are still slow. Sound familiar?

Here is the truth: the problem is not your phone, your page or the algorithm. The problem is that you do not fully understand your customer yet.

New tools come every year. Facebook boosts. TikTok. AI captions. But the businesses that keep winning all know one thing: how people think and buy.

The good news? You can learn it. This article shows you 7 things to study. Each one ends with a simple question. Use it before every post, ad or offer.

1. Psychology: Why People Stop Scrolling

People do not buy with their head first. They buy with their heart. Then they use their head to explain why.

Picture a mother in Mbezi. It is 9pm. She is scrolling Instagram. Does she care about your “premium fabric”? No.

She cares about looking beautiful at Sunday’s harusi without touching the school fees money. Talk to that feeling, and she stops.

Three ideas to learn first:

  • Social proof: people copy what others do. Show happy customers.
  • Scarcity: “Only 5 left” makes people move.
  • Fear of loss: people hate missing out more than they love winning.

Ask: Why would someone care about this?

2. Consumer Behavior: What Happens Before They Pay

You post an ad. A customer sends: “Bei gani?” You reply. Then… silence.

Did she reject you? Not always. Most of the time, she is just unsure. Is this seller real? Will delivery reach me? Should I wait for salary day? (Read more on why customers screenshot your price and disappear.)

Your job is to remove every doubt before she has to ask:

  • Show real reviews and photos from customers.
  • Make delivery clear: where, how long, how much.
  • Offer easy payment: Lipa Namba, M-Pesa or cash on delivery.
  • Follow up kindly after one or two days.

Ask: What happens between “I’m interested” and “I’ll buy”?

3. Positioning: Why You, Not Them?

There are hundreds of bakeries in Dar es Salaam. So why should anyone choose yours?

  • Weak: “We sell cakes.”
  • Strong: “Custom birthday cakes. Delivered the same day, anywhere in Kinondoni.”

See the difference? The second one tells the customer who you serve, what you solve and why you are the easy choice.

Here is the secret most people miss: you cannot be for everyone. When you speak to one type of customer, the right people find you faster and remember you longer.

Ask: Why this instead of the alternatives?

4. Copywriting: Words That Make People Act

Nobody wants a drill. They want a hole in the wall. That is the biggest copywriting lesson: sell the result, not the thing.

Instead of this (feature)Say this (result)
5000mAh batteryYour phone lasts all day. No more hunting for a socket.
Online course with 12 videosStart selling on WhatsApp in 2 weeks.
Solar water heaterHot showers every morning, even during power cuts.

Quick tricks that work every time:

  • Write like you talk. If your customers think in Kiswahili, write in Kiswahili.
  • Use “you” more than “we”.
  • Keep sentences short. One idea at a time.
  • End with one clear step: “Tuma ujumbe WhatsApp sasa.”

Ask: Am I selling the feature or the outcome?

5. Storytelling: Facts Tell, Stories Sell

People forget numbers. They remember stories. Read these two posts:

  • Post A: “Our course has helped many women earn online.”
  • Post B: “Mama Neema used to sell vitumbua by the road. Three months after our course, she takes orders on WhatsApp and delivers to offices in Posta.”

Which one stays in your mind? Post B. Another mother reads it and thinks, “If she can do it, so can I.”

Use this simple formula: Before (where the customer started), Change (what happened), After (how life looks now).

Use real customers (with their permission) and let them speak in their own words.

Ask: What changed, why did it matter, and what can people learn?

6. Customer Journey: Do Not Propose on the First Date

Would you ask someone to marry you the first time you meet? Of course not. So why shout “Buy now!” at someone who just heard your name?

Customers move step by step. Each step needs a different message:

StepWhat they thinkWhat you give them
Awareness“I have a problem.”Useful tips, short videos, posts they relate to
Consideration“Can I trust you?”Reviews, before-and-after photos, clear prices
Purchase“Is paying easy and safe?”Mobile money, fast WhatsApp replies
Retention“Was it worth it?”Follow-up, support, offers for returning buyers

Most small businesses only post for the “Purchase” step. Fill the other steps, and your ads will sell more, because people already know and trust you.

Ask: What does this person need to believe before taking the next step?

7. Retention: The Sale Is Just the Start

Finding a new customer costs a lot. Keeping one costs much less. Yet most businesses spend all their money on ads and forget the people who already paid. Big mistake.

Try these this week:

  • Send a thank-you message after every order.
  • Check in after 3 days: “Is everything working well?”
  • Add buyers to a WhatsApp broadcast for new stock.
  • Give a small discount when someone refers a friend.

One happy customer who tells three friends is the cheapest ad you will ever run. Here is a simple way to turn happy customers into free advertising.

Ask: What value are we delivering after the first purchase?

Your 7-Question Checklist (Save This)

Before you post, boost or launch anything, ask:

  1. Why would someone care about this?
  2. What happens between “I’m interested” and “I’ll buy”?
  3. Why this instead of the alternatives?
  4. Am I selling the feature or the outcome?
  5. What changed, why did it matter, and what can people learn?
  6. What does this person need to believe before taking the next step?
  7. What value are we delivering after the first purchase?

Cannot answer one? That is where your money is leaking.
