How to Protect Your Facebook and Instagram Accounts From Hackers

2 min read

One morning you open Instagram and your account is gone. Your photos, your customers, your orders. All of it now belongs to a stranger.

It can happen to any business. The good news is that you can make your accounts much safer in about 20 minutes. Here are 7 steps. Do them today, not next week.

1. Use a strong password that is only for this account

If you use the same password on many apps, one leak opens every door. Give Facebook and Instagram their own strong passwords. Learn how in How to Create Strong Passwords You Can Remember.

2. Turn on two-step verification

This asks for a code from your phone when someone logs in. Even if a hacker has your password, the code stops them. In the app, open Settings, find Accounts Center, then Password and security. Look for two-factor authentication and turn it on.

3. Protect your email first

Your email can reset your accounts. If a hacker gets your email, they can take everything else. Use a strong password and two-step verification on your email too.

4. Never share a code with anyone

If someone asks for the code sent to your phone, say no. A real Meta worker will never ask you for it in a chat.

5. Do not trust scary messages

Watch out for messages like “Your page will be deleted today” or “You broke a copyright rule, click here”. These are tricks to steal your login. Do not click the link. Open the app yourself and check your notifications there.

6. Check where you are logged in

In the same Password and security area, look at the list of devices. See a phone or computer you do not know? Log it out right away and change your password.

7. Add a second admin you trust, and remove old ones

If you lose access, a second admin can help you get back in. Also remove any staff member or freelancer who no longer works with you.

Your page is your shop. Lock it like you lock your door at night.

Quick checklist

  • A different strong password for each account
  • Two-step verification on Facebook, Instagram and email
  • No codes shared with anyone
  • Unknown devices logged out
  • One trusted second admin
