How to Create Strong Passwords You Can Remember

2 min read

Is your password your name and 123? Your phone number? Your birth year?

If yes, you are not alone. But these passwords are easy to guess. And if someone guesses the password to your email, mobile money or social media, you can lose a lot.

The good news: a strong password does not have to be hard to remember.

Rule 1: Long is better than tricky

A password like “P@ssw0rd!” looks smart, but it is easy for a computer to guess. A long password made of random words is much harder to guess, and easier for you to remember.

Rule 2: Use 4 random words

Pick four words that have nothing to do with each other. Put them together.

Picture a funny story in your head: a motorbike drinking tea in the rain with five friends. Now you remember it. Do not use this exact password. Make your own.

Rule 3: Never use personal details

Do not use your name, your phone number, your birth year, your child name, or the name of your business. People who know you can guess these.

Rule 4: Use a different password for each important account

Start with the most important ones: your email, your mobile money, your bank and your social media. If one password leaks, the others stay safe.

Rule 5: Keep a safe backup

You cannot remember every password. That is normal. Write the hard ones in a notebook and keep it at home, in a safe place. Do not keep a photo of your passwords on your phone. A password manager app is also a good choice.

Rule 6: Add two-step verification

This sends a code to your phone when someone logs in. It adds a second lock. Turn it on for your email and social media first.

Rule 7: Never share your password or codes

No bank, mobile money company or social media app will ask you for your password or your one time code in a chat. If someone asks, it is a trick.

Quick checklist

  • Four random words, not personal details
  • A different password for email, mobile money and social media
  • A notebook at home as a backup
  • Two-step verification turned on
  • Nothing shared with anyone
