How to Keep Your Social Media Clean Before Employers Look
You send your CV. You wait. No call.
Maybe your CV was fine. But some employers search your name online before they call you. They may look at your Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. What will they find?
You can fix this in about an hour. Here is how.
1. Search for yourself
Type your full name into Google. Then search your name on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X. See what a stranger sees. Do it on a phone where you are not logged in, if you can.
2. Check your privacy settings
On each app, find the privacy settings. Decide what the public can see. Keep personal family photos and private chats away from strangers.
3. Look at your profile photo and bio
Use a clear photo of your face, with good light and neat clothes. Write a short bio with your skill or what you are looking for. For example: “Marketing graduate. Learning social media.”
4. Remove or hide old posts you would not show your boss
Think about angry posts, fights, rude jokes or photos you would not show a manager. Delete them, or hide them. Check photos where friends tagged you too. You can often remove the tag.
5. Fix your username
A username like “bigboy_party_255” may not look good to an employer. Choose a simple name, like your own name. Use the same name on every app so people can find you.
6. Show your good side on purpose
Share things that show your skills. A school project, a certificate, a short tip about your work, or a small job you finished. You do not need to post every day. A few good posts are enough.
7. Make one account professional
If you do not want to clean everything, keep your personal account private. Then use LinkedIn as your professional account. See How to Set Up a LinkedIn Profile That Actually Gets Noticed in Tanzania’s Job Market.
Your social media is your second CV. Make sure it says what you want it to say.
