How to Find Remote and Freelance Work From Tanzania
You do not need an office in Dar es Salaam to earn money. You can do work for a client in another town, or in another country.
To start, you need three things: a skill people pay for, proof that you can do it, and a way to be found.
Step 1: Pick one skill to sell
Do not try to sell ten skills. Pick one. Here are some ideas:
- Writing and editing
- Social media posts and captions
- Graphic design on Canva
- Video editing on your phone
- Typing, data entry and spreadsheets
- English and Kiswahili translation
- Helping a busy owner with messages and bookings (a virtual assistant)
Step 2: Make 3 sample pieces
Clients want to see your work before they pay. Make three samples for the skill you picked, even if no one has hired you yet. For example, three social media posts for an imaginary shop.
Step 3: Put your work in one place
Make a simple page that shows your samples. A LinkedIn profile is a good start. Learn how in How to Set Up a LinkedIn Profile That Actually Gets Noticed in Tanzania’s Job Market.
Step 4: Look in the right places
- LinkedIn jobs and posts
- Freelance websites where clients post work
- Facebook and WhatsApp groups for business owners
- Small business owners near you who need help online
Step 5: Send a short pitch
Hello [Name], I help small businesses with [your skill]. I made a sample for your shop, here is the link. Can I send you a price for 5 posts?
Keep it short. Show one sample. Ask one question. For more on short messages, see How to Write a Short Business Message That Gets a Reply.
Step 6: Start with a small paid job
Your first client may pay a small amount. That is fine. Do it well. Ask for a short review you can show to the next client.
Be careful
Some fake jobs target people who want remote work. Never pay to get work. Read How to Search for Jobs Online in Tanzania Without Falling for Fake Offers.
Your first client is the hardest to find. After that, each client helps you find the next one.
